A Living Tribute to Beypore Sultan: Vaikom Muhammed Basheer Smarakam
The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has taken a remarkable step to honor the legacy of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, one of Kerala’s most celebrated writers, affectionately known as the Beypore Sultan. A memorial is being developed at Beypore, Kozhikode, near Basheer’s former residence, aiming to transform the site into a vibrant cultural and literary hub.
A Cultural Hub Rooted in Legacy
The proposed memorial, titled ‘Vaikom Muhammed Basheer Smarakam’, is more than just a tribute. It is envisioned as a dynamic public space celebrating literature, culture, and community. At its heart lies the spirit of Basheer—his inclusivity, wit, and deep empathy for people—all reflected in the spatial design.
Key Features of the Memorial
Community Hall with three convention spaces, pantry, office, and support facilities.
Cultural Centre housing Basheer’s archives, a library, boardrooms, a museum-like gallery, and a raised stage for performances.
Amphitheatre & Stage nestled under an existing raintree, with provisions for performers and events.
‘Aksharathottam’ (Garden of Letters), a landscaped trail that narrates Basheer’s life through elevated decks, installations, and reflective zones.
Curio Shop for local crafts and souvenirs.
‘Chaayakada on Wheels’, a repurposed vehicle serving as a food truck during events.
Eco-sensitive Landscaping, using local materials and native vegetation to enhance biodiversity and manage waterlogging.
Accessible Design, with ramps, raised plinths, and natural integration into the terrain.
Connecting Communities Through Design
The memorial not only revives a dilapidated site (the old Beypore community hall) but also aims to empower the local community. Abandoned nearby buildings may be reused for writer residencies, while adjacent public spaces could host exhibitions and cultural events—all feeding into a sustainable income model for the locality.
By blending Basheer’s literary essence with modern cultural infrastructure, the Vaikom Muhammed Basheer Smarakam will become a landmark of community, creativity, and cultural continuity—a living space that invites everyone to remember, engage, and celebrate.
